Wow, you’re a fantastic and professional artist!
I really remember the Max Rep comics from Muscular Development! They were sort of like “Speed Racer,” except for bodybuilding instead of car racing, with crazy characters and gadgets, with bodybuilding contests where spies try to sneak plans and hide them in a locker or something.
I used to read MD back when Dennis Newman was all over the place on it. Max Rep was weird and cool and totally a unique act of creation – I loved the hero. He looked very working-class, very Rocky.
The thing I liked about Max Rep, and this sounds obvious but I was very young when that comic came out so it was revelation to a young me…was the idea that sports were a business, and athletes were basically businesspeople.
I actually don’t remember there being a female bodybuilder in the comic at all, but that’s pretty cool since a lot of people don’t think of female bbers as anything but an afterthought, which is tragically typical of women’s sports. This one looks a little more Lenda Murray than say, Rachel McLish but maybe in the future bodybuilding will get bigger and crazier so it’s logical.
It’s obvious to me you’re an actual bodybuilder or have experience with it, because it shows with several panels, how awful and painful weight training really is, or the types of exercises you need to do for upper pecs (I was not aware the pecs were divided into locations with different exercises).
All that gives it tons of authenticity! I read lots of jungle adventure novels and you can always tell the writers that have actually been to Africa and those that just write about it.
The bee girl is a great idea because, like Virginia Woolfe said, the surest way to tell if female characters are real people or just an object for male characters is if the female characters form friendships with each other.
The idea of switching it to a woman was weird to me at first, but I realized it was genius. Boys and girls read Nancy Drew for different reasons; boys because they’d like to get with her and women because they’d like to be more like her. Blu’s cute but not super crazy sexy, has an “odd” body that makes her distinct.
Also, much more has been written about male bodybuilding.
So, the pop thing…obviously I’m curious what tactic you’re going to take on that. The obvious thing would to have it be some sinister chemical that you can do an anti-steroid moral on. That’s actually pretty heroic since juicing is everywhere (I doubt you could publish it in today’s Muscular Development).
Then again, maybe it’s something even more unusual: a pro-steroid moral. That’s possible because as you can see from this scene, they use the pops, sure, but it’s a supplement, work makes everything possible.
Did you ever read Jose Canseco’s book, “Juiced?” In it, he argued that basically performance enhancers are a legit part of how sports work, are not as bad as they say, and are so universal that going after them is just hypocrisy. I didn’t agree with him, but I respect it when people take a stand that is controversial, not everybody can agree with.
By the way, is Quadra Blu named after voice actress and director Susan Blu?
Is Q-ball going to run into some male bodybuilders? I love the strip but it’s in bad, bad need of some beefcake!
Thank you for your amazing and insightful comments, EsperantoGrrl! Such comments make it worth the effort to put out the Quadra-Blu series. I also appreciate the fact you remember the old Max rep series.
Quadra-Blu is the star mainly because it was the female-muscle fans that have asked me to bring her back. They “missed” me (or Quadra, anyway) where no one else did. All the new stories take place “Pre Max”, so we really get to know the girl. The lollipops are intended to be a kind’ov suggestive sexy way to introduce a recurring element of the story (actually the business side you mentioned above-performance enhancing candy). I will, eventualy, add some beefcake, but Quadra is going to meet all kinds of guys first.
Yes, I do have a bodybuilding background, tho’ poor genetics for it, and try to mine my experiences to turn into weird stories to tell here. I hope you’ll stay with Quadra-Blu’s adventures and please tell your friends about it!!
Female muscle fans brought her back, eh? I think that’s pretty funny.
It reminds me of how Anna Nicole Smith had more fans, not less, when she started to get fat, because when she was skinny she was just another model and when she got heavy and thick, she could scratch an itch for a lot of guys that wasn’t being scratched.
It’s great to have fans like that though! Though I have to admit while my memories of Max Rep were less than perfect (it was years ago) I always brought it up when talking about MD’s shift in direction.
Does the future have like a figure class? Ha ha, they’d probably be as big as female bodybuilders are now.
Yup! The new panels work for me. This would be a movie I’d pay to see. Wish it could be. I am intrigue on what will happen next.
Nice bicep on Bee there! Looking back, I guess she’s definitely bigger than Quadra right now.
Good eyes Chip’. The B is bigger (and a bit taller) than Quadra right now. Quadra-Blu is learnin’ from one of the best. She’l outdo B in time, but I can’t have her “outgrow” the storyline too quickly. Ultimately Quadra’s physique will be ruled by flow and proportion, but her nightmares not necessarily so…
She can haz lollipop.
These lollipops outdo cheezburgers. I figured you were going to call her a wuss again….
I’m loving bee’s philosophy and thought process already! Very nice page sir.
Thanks BK! I appreciate you keeping tabs on the ladies!
